Our School

Together we are stronger, and success happens when we work as one.

From the Principal

It is a privilege to be the principal of West Leederville Primary School, a vibrant place of learning and social growth. Proudly inner-city, our school is just three kilometres from the Perth CBD, with a cosmopolitan community of students from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Established in 1898, it is one of the oldest primary schools in Western Australian, ensuring a rich history and traditions. Over the years the school has grown significantly, expanding to fill the site. While the original heritage building remains, additional modern buildings now house over 500 students. It is a beautiful site, nestled within the West Leederville community, with glimpses of the city skyline in the background.
The highlight of our school is our students, who constantly display our school values of perseverance, kindness respect, excellence and courtesy. They have a growth mindset and demonstrate a creative and inquisitive outlook on life. Students are supported by dedicated and highly motivated staff, who are committed to improving outcomes for all students.
Our staff are committed to:
  • Ensuring students are at the centre of all decision making
  • Focusing on the whole child
  • Supporting all students at their point of need
  • A consistent, whole school approach to curriculum and pedagogy
  • Providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students to thrive
  • Working together to achieve strong student outcomes
  • Maintaining high expectations of everyone in our school community
  • Encouraging open and respectful communication
The school is firmly embedded into the culture of the local community, and supported by a strong P&C and School Board. This ensures a warm and embracing environment where everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate in the daily life of the school. We are grateful for this engagement and collaboration because we know, when everyone works together, great things happen. We are confident that you and your children will have a happy and successful time at West Leederville Primary School and encourage you to take full advantage of the many opportunities our great school has to offer.

School Business Plan

Our Business Plan outlines the school’s strategic intent for a three year period. In creating our Business Plan, the school utilises available data to create goals and targets aligned with the Department’s strategic focus. This is developed in conjunction with our staff and community, and provides a direction for the school’s teaching and learning. The school undertakes self assessment annually to determine progress towards the goals and targets, and this is shared with the community in the Annual Report.

Annual Report

The Annual Report provides parents, carers and the wider community with an overview of West Leederville Primary School’s learning programs, achievements and school-wide progress. It reflects our ongoing commitment to student success and outlines how we are working towards the strategic priorities and targets outlined in our Business Plan.

As one part of the school’s broader reporting process, the Annual Report is best understood alongside other key documents such as the Business Plan, school policies and parent information booklets, all of which are available on our website.

Public School Review

The Department of Education’s Public School Review process provides oversight of school performance and supports school improvement. It is a three-year cycle of self-assessment and review, allowing the school community to reflect upon performance and identify areas of improvement. Our most recent Public School Review report can be located here:

Policies

Please find our various school policies here. All policies are also available from our school administration office.

West Leederville School Board

As an Independent Public School (IPS), West Leederville Primary School has a School Board. The functions of boards are covered by legislation and include both approval and advisory roles. It plays an important role in contributing to good school governance so that school resources are used efficiently, and community expectations and the school’s priorities reflect the needs of students.
The board’s role is to represent the whole school community in setting the school’s direction and priorities, and assessing the school’s performance. Some of these roles and responsibilities include:
  • Establish and review the school’s objectives, priorities and general policy directions
  • Plan financial arrangements necessary to fund those objectives, priorities and directions
  • Evaluate the school’s performance in achieving those objectives, priorities and directions
  • Formulate codes of conduct for students at the school
  • Take part in the selection of (but not the appointment of) the school principal
  • Provide advice on charges, contributions and costs determined by the principal to be paid for the provision of materials, services and facilities, and participation in an extra cost optional component of the school’s educational program
  • Promote the school in the community
  • Liaise with other groups/committees associated with the school e.g. the Parents and Citizens’ Association
  • Hold at least two (2) meetings per year, that are generally open to the public.

The board does not intervene in the control or management of the school. This is the role of the principal.

The current School Board is made up of 11 members; 5 parent representatives, 4 staff members including the principal and 2 community representatives.

  • Melissa Bowen (chair)
  • Kirsten Dicker (principal)
  • Trent Durward (parent)
  • Emily Taylor (parent)
