At West Leederville Primary School, the teaching of English occurs in integrated literacy blocks. Students experience a range of reading and writing procedures including: independent, modelled, shared and guided reading and writing, language experience, and book discussion groups. First Steps resources form the basis of effectively-differentiated learning programs.
Teaching in the early years reflects a balance of intentional teaching in literacy (phonics, phonemic awareness and oral language) as well as directed play as per the Early Years Learning Framework and National Quality Standard. The Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar programs are used to explicitly teach phonics. There is also a heavy focus on oral language and phonemic awareness.
Words Their Way is the whole-school approach to spelling, and is implemented from Years 1 – 6.
